Oral Health Concerns for Teens

Posted .

Do you want your teen to have a strong and healthy smile? If so, then you need to help them clean and care for their teeth and gums regularly. Our dentist, Dr. Scott Stucki, understands that your teen might be busy, but smile care needs to be a top priority. Unfortunately, there are many oral health problems your teen can suffer from. It’s best to do all you can to help them avoid or treat those problems. They are:

-Smile misalignment: Crooked teeth and a misaligned bite can harm your teen’s oral health because the crooked teeth harbor bacteria and harmful substances in small, hard-to-clean areas of the smile, and the misaligned bite can wear the teeth down and affect the jaw as well as the performance of daily tasks. Orthodontic treatment can help your teen treat misalignment problems.

-Wisdom teeth problems: Wisdom teeth are third molars in the back of the mouth that don’t erupt until the teen years. They cause problems more often then they don’t. If your dentist sees fit, wisdom tooth extraction could be the right treatment for your teen.

-Tooth decay and gum disease: Poor oral hygiene, smoking, eating disorders and drug use could all cause tooth decay and gum disease, which are two very serious and dangerous dental problems. You can help your teen avoid these oral health and other health problems by encouraging them to keep up on oral hygiene, stop smoking, quit drug use and stop their eating disorder.
